Mirza Fawad Baig

Mirza Fawad Baig is from a family with a history of public service going back 3 generations. His great grandfather was the Secretary of the All India Muslim League in 1908 (AIML), the leading political party that co-negotiated the independence of Pakistan and India from British Colonialism through a non-violent political process. He was also close friends with most of the leaders of that time including Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Mohandas Gandhi.

His grandmother was also an active member in the women’s wing of the AIML. She was an educated lady who lost her husband at an early age and devoted her entire life to social work. Establishing Sir Syed Girls College, an institution dedicated to providing higher education to girls in her home city of Karachi, Pakistan was one of her major achievements.

Both of Mirza’s parents were also involved in public service. His mother, a social worker, served as a member of the Senate in Pakistan. His father-in-law pioneered the notion of autonomous municipal governments during the early stages of Pakistan’s development as a nation.

Mirza was born in Karachi, Pakistan but grew up in Lahore where he attended St. Antony’s High School. He went on to receive a Masters of Economics in 1975 from Government College, Lahore. Upon graduation he was employed by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics. In 1981 he moved to the Middle East starting a promising 15 year career as an advertising & marketing consultant. Some of his clients included multinational companies such as Citizen and Samsung.

In the mid ’90s, he moved to Mississauga with his wife and 4 young children. Keeping in line with family traditions, he became involved in politics when he joined the Liberal Party of Canada in 1999. Over the years he has campaigned for many successful MPs & MPPs in Mississauga such as Bob Delaney, Carolyn Parrish, Omar Alghabra & Charles Souza. He was also involved in the 2006 Liberal Leadership race supporting Gerard Kennedy and then the eventual victor Stéphane Dion.

Mirza has held distinctive roles in various community organizations including serving as the Vice President of the Mississauga Streetsville Provincial Riding & the Director of the Mississauga Erindale Federal Riding. He has also served as a Director in the Extended Family Forum Offering Relief & Trust (EFFORT) based in Mississauga. Mirza has worked within the community to raise funds for the Credit Valley Hospital, victims of the earthquake and recently the floods in Pakistan.

Mirza is currently an investor in real estate, stocks and derivatives. He also fronts an investors group, seeking private equity or commercial development opportunities in Mississauga.

Today he is a family man, married for 26 years with 4 grown children. The eldest being Zainab, 25, then Saad, 24, followed by Amna, 22, & Fatima, 16.  He is a loving father and husband who enjoys gardening, spending time with family and travelling.
